However, using the master tape of the music recordings in question, the plaintiffs could not isolate the alleged messages or persuasively argue the causal connection.
The prosecution eded in a hung jury in summer , and the state did not reprosecute. Congress has investigated music and pop culture, along with attempting to pass some music legislation.
The PMRC advocated an extensive, content-based labeling system for sound recordings. In this photo, Tipper Gore, wife of Sen. Al Gore Jr. The Supreme Court issued a decision in Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union affirming a lower court finding of the CDA as unconstitutional because it was overbroad and vague. COPA was challenged in Ashcroft v. Not every graphic song was quite so sex-positive. Then along came the Parents Music Resource Center PMRC , whose crusade for music censorship was in some ways the best thing to happen to musical freedom in the 80s.
You might call the former First Lady Tipper Gore and her crew the definitive mix of noble intentions and utterly ham-fisted execution.
The inevitable result was a career boost for everyone the PMRC targeted. Ozzy Osbourne was in the headlines again, the shock-metal band WASP extended its 15 minutes of fame for a few hours, and the popular music community now had something to rally around.
This perhaps was an ominous hint that anti-corporate sentiment was about to replace sex and drugs as the real taboo. Here again, the intentions were probably good, but it looked like a case of corporate overreach, seemingly targeting any song that mentioned New York, had the slightest war imagery, or made any kind of political statement.

As a sort of concludimg point, I like to think that for the most port the question of censorship has not necessarily been answered, but has begun to be clarified. In order to truly understand censorship in its various degrees, it is important to survey the various ways in which censorship is used not only in the US, but around the world.
By understanding a general survey and seeing what remains constant across that general survey, I believe it is possible to begin to pinpoint the essence of censorship. In terms of dealing with labels of obscenity and offence, I think it has become clear that these labels are subjective and at times even the institutions that provide definitions for these terms are often times vague.
I find that it is important to begin to see that the definition of obscene, or rather, what is considered to be obscene will continue to change as new generations come and go. Keeping this in mind may help clarify some of the vagueness that surrounds censorship and its ever-changing radar. Censorship in Television. It is a language. An art. A communicator of emotion.
While we are dancing or singing along to a track that makes us feel good - this is powerful. When we have experienced a loss and cry while listening to a depressing song - this is powerful. It can affect our emotions in many ways, but beyond the simplistic happy and sad range. Music captivates us, motivates us, inspires us and it is a language that communicates across all boundaries, across the world - makes us feel. It is so powerful in fact, as we can see above, it is feared and banned.
The truth of a song is more powerful than we know, and it is possibly the greatest tool we have to change the world. Food for thought.
