Adoption is a much cheaper option when compared to foster care and family support, as it allows councils to shed themselves of children, and the associated and often significant costs that go with fostering and social care. Placing children in adoptive families means councils and agencies no longer have to bear the financial costs of child care, which are transferred, often in full, to the adoptive parents. To enable these placements, social services teams and independent adoption agencies are not being honest with adoptive families about the children on their books.
I felt abandoned. Their behaviour is a result of their life experience. They are not responsible for anything to do with the breakdown. There was no recognition, no offer of support. What me and the children needed was just dismissed. Birth parents are also abandoned, as councils prioritise cost-cutting over genuine care. That can be a difficult relationship and for that reason a lot of people will come to an organisation like ourselves for peer support and advocacy from others who've a 'lived experience'.
The charity organisation offers support to families at all stages of the adoption process and is funded through the HSCB. We have an advocacy worker who supports families facing issues that could relate to the behaviour of a child, education, or contact with birth parents and where an adoption placement is at risk of breaking down.
We have over member families across Northern Ireland and that does not include all of the adoption community. The adoption process is complex and brings with it many challenges.
Sheila Lavery, who is leading a pilot project in post-adoption support in Northern Ireland, said trauma is among the greatest challenges. Meaningful support from the outset of the adoption journey could result in significantly better outcomes for all involved. The five-year pilot initiative offers post-adoption support to families with children between the age of years. Supports can range from equine, art, and music therapy to counselling for parents, as well as awareness and training programmes for schools.
These therapeutic supports include Theraplay and specialist therapies to treat emotional and behavioural difficulties.
